Common Causes of Sidewalk Breakages

Conflict Between Sidewalks and Your Landscaping The good news is that this problem is fairly easy to predict. (Who doesn’t notice when an oversized piece of machinery or the like is on their sidewalk, after all?) It’s also pretty rare since a heavy piece of equipment is quite unlikely to be perched on your concrete for a significant amount of time.

The bad news is that it’s not impossible that your concrete could be subjected to bearing a too-heavy load from, say, line work or the like. In any case, you can expect your concrete to literally crack under the pressure, so keep it in mind should heavy equipment ever need to be parked atop it.

Ground Movement

While you can’t predict and, to a pretty good degree, prevent an overload from causing your sidewalks to crack, you can’t enjoy the same control over everything that can damage your sidewalks. For instance, you can’t do anything to keep the ground from moving.

A natural and unstoppable phenomenon, ground movement will gradually shift your concrete about, and this process will lead to cracks. So, when you notice that sidewalk cracks have appeared seemingly for no reason, you can very likely attribute the problem to ground movement.

Change in Temperature

Of course, ground movement isn’t always the cause of inexplicable sidewalk breakages. For instance, a change in temperature can also be to blame. As the temps go from a substantial high to a substantial low in little amount of time, your concrete could suffer from expansions and contractions that lead to breakages.

Though you obviously can’t do anything to stop the weather from fluctuating like that, you can at least use these fluctuations as a heads-up to keep an eye on your concrete. You might expect to see breakages in the near future as your concrete expands and contracts.
